Vice President Kamala Harris to visit U.S.-Mexico border on Friday

Texas Democrat Rep. Henry Cuellar on Saturday said he had not heard back from Harris after inviting her to visit the border. That was the central message during her first foreign trip, a two-day visit to Mexico and Guatemala earlier this month.

The trip is part of her job of addressing the root causes of migration from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.

The visit comes as Harris has faced months of attacks from Republicans, and even some frustration from those in her own party, for declining to visit the area.

Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday wore a new hat in the Biden administration - publicizing the expanded Child Tax Credit - while she has taken criticism for failing to visit the border since she was named border czar in March.

Almost 3,300 migrants stranded in Mexico since January due to a US border policy have been kidnapped, raped, trafficked or assaulted, according to a report by a human rights group released on Tuesday.

Members of her own party were dismayed by some of the comments she made during a joint press conference with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei, where she cautioned migrants against making the "dangerous trek" to the US border and warned they would be turned away.

Republicans in Congress said Harris will see firsthand what the administration's policies have wrought.

But by the end of the trip, after repeated criticism for her answer to questions around her visiting the border, Harris had pledged to visit the border soon.
