Tornado touches down in Chicago suburbs; damages homes, knocks out power

At least five people in Naperville were taken to the hospital with injuries and more than 100 residences were damaged, along with countless trees, the weather service said.

Near the identified tornado, a violent storm left serious property damage to Naperville, Burridge and Darien.

At least five people were injured, including one critically, and a dozen homes were damaged in a possible tornado outbreak in IL on Sunday, officials said.

Chicago-area utility Commonwealth Edison's (ComEd) website showed that more than 22,000 customers were without power as the thunderstorms swept through the region, near Lake Michigan in the north of the state of IL. "Lots of utility poles and wires have fallen and the trees have been damaged", Lacroche said Monday morning.

The tornado landed at Woodridge around 11:30 pm on Sunday night between 83rd and 75th Avenues east of Route 53. A gas leak and injuries were reported in nearby Naperville, news outlets reported.

The threat of wind damage remained for a few hours as the line of storms moved over northern IL and into northwestern IN, forecasters said.

No fatalities were reported. The severe threat was declared over at 2 a.m. local time.
