As confirmed cases of the Delta variant of COVID-19 continue to rise in Alberta, there are conflicting statements regarding how effective the first dose of vaccine is at protecting against severe outcomes of infection.
New data published this week by the PHE showed the AstraZeneca vaccine is 92 percent effective against hospitalization from the Delta variant after two doses, and the Pfizer vaccine is 96 percent effective against hospitalisation after two doses.
According to British health officials, the Delta coronavirus variant also known as B.1.617.2 has risen exponentially with over 33,000 cases reported cases last week.
According to Public Health England's latest Variant Technical Briefing, as of 14th June, a total of 806 people had been hospitalised with the Delta Variant, an increase of 423 since last week.
"The most recent data show 99 percent of sequenced and genotyped cases across the country are the Delta variant", the PHE said.
That compares to 11,007 new cases yesterday and 19 fatalities within 28 days of a positive test.

The cumulative caseload stands at 29,183,121, including 27,655,493 recoveries, 1,167,952 active cases and 359,676 deaths. The total number of recoveries had reached 2,75,04,126 in the country taking the recovery rate at 94.55 per cent.
Of these, 527 were unvaccinated and only 84 of the 806 had received both doses - although it is unclear how long it had been since their second dose, as it takes a couple of weeks to build up protection.
The highest number of cases recorded in an authority in Sussex was in Brighton and Hove, which recorded 289 infections.
The Delta variant is being watched carefully in Alberta, given it is now the dominant strain in the United Kingdom and, with its rapid transmission, is threatening plans there to reopen the economy and lift health restrictions.
A study by Imperial College London showed that the virus is spreading rapidly in the younger age group who haven't been vaccinated amid fears of increased hospitalisations. Please make sure that you come forward to receive both doses of the vaccine as soon as you are eligible.
The Delta variant now accounts for nearly all of the UK's coronavirus cases, according to Public Health England. "Don't drop your guard - practise "hands, face, space, fresh air" at all times".
