Doug Suh, who lives across the street, told The Mercury News in San Jose that Cassidy seemed "strange" and that he never saw anyone visit.

The Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner identified the victims as Paul Delacruz Megia, 42; Taptejdeep Singh, 36; Adrian Balleza, 29; Jose Dejesus Hernandez, 35; Timothy Michael Romo, 49; Michael Joseph Rudometkin, 40; Abdolvahab Alaghmandan, 63, and Lars Kepler Lane, 63.

The now-deceased suspect in the San Jose shooting has been identified as Samuel James Cassidy, a 57-year-old California resident who worked for the VTA.

The shooter had more than one gun, county District Attorney Jeff Rosen said.

One VTA employee, who asked not to be named, claimed Cassidy had essentially gunned down an entire shift of employees at the transit agency.

"I can't confirm the exact number of injuries and fatalities", he said.

The suspect and another individual filed domestic violence restraining orders against one another in 2009, three years after Cassidy divorced his spouse, according to online court records.

"He told people, "be careful, hide".

Mayor Sam Liccardo of San Jose announced that there will be a rally for shooting victims at City Hall Plaza on Thursday at 6 pm.

Firefighters responded to a fire at a home where the suspect lived at about the same time that the shooting was first reported.

Bomb squads were dispatched to the scene after reports of an explosive device.

President Joe Biden was briefed on the shooting, and his staff continued to monitor the situation while keeping in close contact with local officials to offer any assistance needed, the White House said.

Officials have neither identified a motive for the shooting nor released the type of gun used in the attack. Mass gun violence has escalated considerably as the US emerges out from the worst of the pandemic this spring.
