NY prosecutors' imminent presentation of evidence against Trump's business, first reported by the Washington Post, citing two people familiar with the development, signals that the criminal investigation into the former president has entered a new phase. It also will hear other matters during that time, according to the Post.

The decision to convene a grand jury appears to indicate that the Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance hopes to move towards bringing charges as a result of his two-year investigation.

The district attorney obtained the sought-after files earlier this year, and the office's probe continued to heat up, with the hiring of a forensic accountant and outside counsel with experience prosecuting the mob to help out on the investigation.

A spokesman for Vance refused to comment when contacted by AFP.

But in his blog Tuesday, Trump accused prosecutors of targeting him for the Russian Federation investigation, which has nothing to do with the case in NY.

Her spokesperson said the inquiry into Mr Trump's property company was "no longer purely civil".

Trump's ex-personal lawyer Michael Cohen - jailed for tax evasion and violating campaign finance laws - was one of his closest henchmen before turning against his former boss and deciding to cooperate with prosecutors.
