Health Canada says the updated approval is effective immediately, so if provinces choose to, they can start giving the shot to children in this approved age group right away.

"This is the first vaccine authorized in Canada for the prevention of COVID-19 in children and marks a significant milestone in Canada's fight against the pandemic", she said.

Sharma says data from trials in children between 12 and 15 has shown that, after the second dose, Pfizer's vaccine was 100 per cent effective in preventing COVID-19.

The vaccine was authorised in December for use in Canadians 16 and older.

"It will also support the return to a more normal life for our children, who have had such a hard time over the past year", she said.

"Based on what we've seen, we believe that a durable demand for our Covid-19 vaccine - similar to that of the flu vaccines - is a likely outcome", said chief executive Albert Bourla.

More than half of Americans have received at least one dose of a vaccine.

Other manufacturers of the four vaccines authorised in Canada - the others are AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson and Moderna - are conducting or planning their own studies in children as young as six months old.

South Korea has secured enough COVID-19 vaccines to inoculate 99 million people under COVAX and separate contracts with five foreign drug firms, including Pfizer. Once that immune response is triggered, antibodies are produced, which protect people from being infected should the virus enter their system in the future.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is also expected to authorize Pfizer's vaccine for young people by next week, setting up shots for many before the beginning of the next school year.
