Today's full moon, which will be the year's biggest supermoon and feature the first total lunar eclipse in more than two years, will be visible from most areas in Japan.

Earth's shadow crept across the moon on Wednesday night as people in New Zealand and around the world waited for a cosmic event known as a super blood moon.

The next Super Blood Moon is expected to take place in 2033, news agency AFP reported. The moon will be fully immersed in the umbra beginning at 4:11 a.m. PDT, reaches maximum eclipse at 4:18 a.m. PDT, and starts its exit from the umbra at 4:25 a.m. PDT. The moon was completely covered by the Earth's shadow for about 19 minutes from around 8:09 p.m. Some hypothesized that the December 22, 2018, eruption of Anak Krakatau in Indonesia darkened the 2019 eclipse, since pollutants in Earth's atmosphere filter sunlight reaching the moon.

During a Super Moon, the moon is closest to Earth, at a distance of just 360,000 kilometres (225,000 miles). It will appear as a "ring of fire" eclipse in Canada.

At the same time, Hamas and Islamic Jihad, a fellow Palestinian militant group, have fired close to 2,000 rockets towards Israel. In addition, strikes killed "a number of terrorists belong to the Hamas naval force", according to a military statement.

Unlike solar eclipses, Attwood says a lunar eclipse can be quite an event to witness, as you can view it with your own eye without the use of specialized safety equipment.

Even if you can't watch the lunar eclipse live, you can still bask in the glory of the supermoon. It will be the last one of the year, as the previous supermoon of 2021 took place on April 26, when it was a Pink Full Moon.

Hoping to catch a view of the moon at night? The May full moon is sometimes known as the "flower moon" in traditional folklore because it's typically at a time of year when spring flowers emerge. This is because when Earth lines up between the moon and the sun the moon is hidden from sunlight.

When is the next lunar eclipse?

In fact, you have to have a full moon in order to have a total lunar eclipse, those two things always go hand in hand.

A partial solar eclipse will be visible in parts of the North and Northeast United States on the morning of June 10, making for a sickle-shaped sunrise. The shadow won't completely mask the moon, but most of it will appear red.
