They further added that the suspect did not appear to wrestle with the police officers.

-Security officials recently started scaling back fencing around U.S. Capitol. He was shot by police and taken into custody. The House and Senate are both undertaking intensive security reviews and making proposals that could reshape the Capitol Police force dramatically.

The police also notified road closures "due to the external security threat at the North Barricade of the US Capitol".

"Please keep the Capitol Police and first responders in your prayers as we try to understand the situation unfolding at the Capitol right now", Rep. Peter Meijer (R-Mich.) tweeted.

"U.S. Capitol Police officers fired upon him". At least one of the officers was seriously injured, the officials said.

A video shared on social media appeared to show a stretcher removing victims from the area and a helicopter landing in front of the east front of the Capitol building.

The incident comes as the Washington region remains on edge almost three months after a mob of armed insurrectionists stormed the Capitol as Congress was voting to certify Joe Biden's presidential win.

Law enforcement officials had removed some of the steel barriers erected following the January riot and the National Guard troops who rushed to Washington in response were being withdrawn.

The most recent was the January 6 riot that saw large crowds of supporters of former President Trump storm the building while Congress was in a joint session to certify President Biden's Electoral College victory. In total, five people died, including Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick.

Law enforcement investigate the scene after a vehicle charged a barricade at the U.S. Capitol on Friday.

The security checkpoint is typically used by senators and staff on weekdays, however Congress is now on recess.

Pelosi ordered the flags at the Capitol to be flown at half-staff in honor of the deceased Capitol Police officer.

Little is known about the suspect or possible motive, authorities said, as the investigation remains in its early stage.
