UAE suspends flights from India

MPs unanimously agreed Canada should suspend global flights from countries where COIVD-19 outbreaks are raging just a few hours before the federal government is expected to announce new restrictions on incoming travel.

From 4am BST (British Summer Time) on Friday - 8:30am Indian time - most people who have travelled from India in the last 10 days will be refused entry.

Four carriers requested to operate an additional eight flights from India as travellers seek to fly before the enforced quarantine comes into effect.

Only, British or Irish passport holders, or people with United Kingdom residence rights will be allowed in but they have to quarantine in a government-approved hotel for 10 days.

The request for extra flights from airlines was turned down because of concerns about queues at passport control, the BBC reported on Thursday.

"The decision to suspend flights came after studying and evaluating the epidemiological situation in the friendly Republic of India", the General Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement carried on state news agency WAM.

The federal government is looking into flights arriving from India due to a massive surge of COVID-19 cases ravaging that country, Canada's top public health doctor said Wednesday as at least one province urged Ottawa to tighten the border. For the past few days, the country has been reporting in excess of two lakh cases.
