Prince Hamzeh, inner clique's attempts to undermine security, stability foiled - deputy PM

Prince Hamzah was asked to "stop some movements and activities that are being used to target Jordan's security and stability", according to General Yousef Huneiti, the army chief of staff.

Ibrahim noted that former Prince Hamzah's criticism of corruption and the country's ruling elite "does resonate with some of the king's critics domestically".

Hamza is not seen to have any real clout and those detained as part of what the military said was an ongoing security investigation mostly number his close aides.

"Prince Hamzah worked to incite and mobilize against the country", the minister said.

"I believe that King Abdullah strengthened his authority and that his son, Hussein, consolidated himself as heir to the throne", said Jawad al Anani, who was the last head of the court during the reign of the late King Hussein.in 1999.

It gave no further details and said an investigation was under way.

Prince Faisal also reiterated the Saudi stance that a normalisation of ties with Israel would only be possible after a peace settlement between Israel and the Palestinians. Jordan is home to more than 2 million Palestinian refugees, most of whom have Jordanian citizenship.

Jordan, which is now under a nightly covid curfew that is set to expire in mid-May, has been hit hard economically by the coronavirus pandemic as well as by the fallout from massive waves of refugees from neighboring Syria.
