One dead, five injured in Vancouver knife-stabbing

Police are working to determine the motive of a series of stabbings that left a woman dead and six others injured inside and around a public library in North Vancouver, B.C., on Saturday. Police found multiple victims inside suffering from stab wounds.

A man who had just arrived at a cafe in the area where seven people were stabbed on Saturday says others worked to help the victims in the minutes before first responders arrived.

Andrew Cocking, who lives 500 metres from the library, told AFP the attack took place an area that's generally very quiet.

North Vancouver RCMP announced today (March 28) that 28-year-old Yannick Bandaogo has been charged with second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of a woman in North Vancouver on March 27. He went through surgery for self-inflicted wounds.

Frank Jang of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said. Sgt. Jang said investigators are looking into his background.

The suspect who reportedly has a criminal record, no updates are given into his condition.

A makeshift memorial grew outside of the Lynn Valley public library a day after the mayhem. "Lynn Valley strong", read a large yellow banner.

Police work the crime scene after the attack.

"My heart is in North Vancouver tonight".

"It was quite shocking because everyone looked quite scared", she said.

He said people brought tea towels and other supplies, including a first aid kit, to the library.

The man backed through the library lobby and down the street and he was there when police arrested the suspect, Hailes said. "After he started stabbing people near the library, chaos ensued, I saw him confronting the police, and then he fled and the police chased him, surrounded him and threw him to the ground". "But no one did anything to him".

District of North Vancouver mayor Mike Little said the incident has shocked his small community. He said they thought she'd been in a auto accident, but she told them she'd just been stabbed by a man.

"I don't even know what to say because this is such a safe neighborhood".

"It's really shocking and upsetting, and we're still trying to process what happened, really".
