Kamala Harris Laughs When Asked If She Plans To Tour Southern Border

Harris said today "no question this is a challenging situation", and as the Times notes, she'll be taking it on in an even more "heated political environment" than five years ago, with Republicans eager to pounce on any missteps with immigration for their own political gain.

The role will represent the first significant item in the vice president's portfolio, and her involvement has the potential to elevate the issue within the White House and broader administration.

"I also look forward to working with members of Congress who I think share our perspective on the need to address root causes for the migration that we've been seeing", she said Thursday at the White House before she and Biden discussed immigration with the secretaries of homeland security and health and human services, as well as other advisers.

"When she speaks, she speaks for me", he said.

"We can talk all day about the symptoms of the situation, but you really have to get at what is causing this phenomenon, and that will be her focus", one of the officials said.

Kissinger spoke to the China Development Forum via a video that was recorded before this week's U.S. I think history and the global community will come to their own conclusions, Yang said.

Still, a separate official said Harris would approach the matter differently than Biden, who traveled to Guatemala City in 2015 for a trilateral meeting with the leaders of Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras in part to develop solutions to issue of migrants from those countries coming en masse to the United States. "She knows what she's doing".

The cascade of immigration policies reversing President Donald Trump's strong immigration enforcement has provoked the flood of migrants flooding across the border. Federal facilities on the southern border have become overwhelmed with those minors.

Additionally, both Harris and Biden have remained vague about when exactly they plan to visit the southern border and seemed to laugh when pressed by reporters.

"He has experience and lived through this process as vice president himself", an official said.

Harris spoke to reporters on the tarmac at a Florida airport before going on the "Help is Here" tour of the nation on Monday. Neither she nor Biden have done so since taking office. "Biden has said over and over again the person that I trust most, the person I turn to when there's a hard issue, is Kamala Harris".
