Video Ignites Tensions in Closed California School District; Board Caught Mocking Parents

All members of a San Francisco Bay area school board resigned days after they were heard making disparaging comments about parents at a virtual board meeting they didn't realize was being broadcast to the public.

Oakley, California residents Claudine Zambrana and Thomas Will react to the city's school board members stepping down from their position after being caught mocking parents who want schools to reopen in a meeting. A recording, posted to YouTube, shows the board talking among themselves, apparently oblivious that the call is open to the public.

The president of the school board, Lisa Brizendine, laments that school officials are being targeted amid frustration over reopening for in-person learning.

Masadas said: "My brother had a delivery service for medical marijuana and he delivered to parents while their kids were at school". When you have your kids at home, more (inaudible), "Masadas said, clasping his hands on his forehead as the others laughed..."

Superintendent Greg Hetrick released a statement condemning the comments, saying he is "responsible and accountable" for what took place.

"I think that would be fantastic", one board member says.

A Zoom meeting mishap landed all members on a California school board in hot water.

Ash Barty's classy response to opponent's timeout controversy
Muchova came out of the break and broke Barty the next game, who lost all four points on her racket with unforced errors. Muchova's only other victory over a Top 5 player was against No. 3 Karolina Pliskova at Wimbledon in 2019.

Trustees were awaiting the start of the meeting when they began discussing parents' letters and social media posts about reopening schools.

"Great", says a board member, before a black screen with the text "Practice session in progress" appears.

"They forget there's real people on the other end of those letters they're writing", Brizendine said of district parents.

At the end of the meeting, Brezendine apologized for the group's earlier remarks, saying "We were having a private conversation because we were really struggling at that moment with all the board comments coming in because we want what's best for the kids so badly".

Parents took umbrage with the comments as students in the school district, which is located in Contra Costa County in the San Francisco Bay area, have been learning remote for nearly a year amid the coronavirus pandemic. It's really unfortunate they want to pick on us.

The Contra Costa County Board of Education president is likely to appoint temporary board members until new ones are "elected or appointed".

Fellow board member Kim Beede took a more direct and explicit approach seconds earlier: "Are we alone?" There has been a lack of communication from the board and this was the first communication we heard, ' the petition states. "They deserve and will need your support as you move forward". Before the meeting officially began and unaware the public could see and hear them, they used profanity and made jokes about parents just wanting a babysitter or to smoke pot in their home. I know that we lost trust with the community. I have been and continue to be committed to working together for the betterment of the Oakley Union Elementary School District students, staff and entire school community.
