He insists that "the Republican Party can never be respected or empowered with political leaders like Mitch McConnell at its head".
Sasse leaves the chamber as the Senate voted to consider hearing from witnesses in the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump.
Despite the potshot at McConnell's family and the insulting characterization of his personality, Trump wanted to lob harsher personal attacks at McConnell, according to a source familiar with Trump's desires.
In his Saturday speech McConnell also accused Trump of a "disgraceful dereliction of duty".
"McConnell did nothing, and will never do what needs to be done in order to secure a fair and just electoral system into the future", the former president said in the statement. He also said McConnell "begged" for his endorsement in the senator's home state of Kentucky while running for reelection a year ago _ and suggested he'd work to defeat McConnell and his Republican allies, saying he planned to "back primary rivals who espouse Making America Great".
Despite their current differences, McConnell played a major role during Trump's administration in helping pass the president's signature 2017 tax cut and in confirming three conservative justices for the U.S. Supreme Court.
Many analysts however blame that loss on Mr Trump himself, for his unsettling refusal to accept President Joe Biden's strong 3 November election victory, based on groundless claims of fraud.
Trump Blasts McConnell And His Leadership In Lengthy Response To Recent Criticism
In another line of personal attack, Trump took aim at McConnell's wife, Taiwan-born Chinese-American Elaine Chow, who was transportation secretary in Trump's cabinet but resigned in protest after the January 6 Capitol assault.
"This is a big moment for our country, and we can not let it pass by using third rate "leaders" to dictate our future!"
In statements explaining their votes to acquit the president they endorsed, Sens. Mr. Trump's lawyers said the former president did not provoke the January 6 attack on the Capitol and that he wanted his followers to demonstrate peacefully after he spoke at a "Stop the Steal" rally in Washington.
But Mr Trump blamed the wily veteran lawmaker, who for four years as majority leader kept the Senate aligned with the Republican president, for losing party control of the body.
"In a Wall Street Journal column on Monday (local time), he repeated his claim, writing: "[Trump's] supporters stormed the Capitol because of the unhinged falsehoods he shouted into the world's largest megaphone".
Trump's statement Tuesday adds McConnell to the list of Republicans whom the former President is targeting after they opposed him.
"His behaviour during and after the chaos was also unconscionable".
McConnell nonetheless voted to acquit Trump, saying he believed the Constitution limited impeachment and conviction to current, not former officials. In this July 01, 2020 photo, Giuliani talks to journalists outside the White House West Wing in Washington, DC.
