This is more than twice the chances that wearing one mask provides, which is 42-44 percent.
But the CDC guidance also suggests adding layers of material - using a cloth mask with multiple layers of fabric or wearing "one disposable mask underneath a cloth mask".
Health officials also added recently discovered variants of the virus likely was a factor in releasing the new suggestion to double mask.
The Journal-World spoke to Marcellino and Dr. Jennifer Schrimsher, an infectious disease physician at LMH Health, individually about the strategy of double masking. Surgical masks have three of those five layers.
"A proper study on the efficacy of masks needs to be a randomized controlled trial involving human beings in their normal settings - such as the Danish mask study that showed there is no evidence that masks do anything to prevent COVID-19 - and not mannequins in a laboratory", he continued.
Local reaction to CDC's recommendation to double mask
The guidance warns against wearing two disposable masks, because they are not created to fit tightly, and also says high-quality N-95 masks should not be combined with other masks.
"One mask with a couple layers is probably going to be more beneficial for the wearer than trying to stack a bunch of masks and not being able to breathe", she said.
How should you wear the masks?Wearers should ensure a tight fit by cupping their hands on the outside edges of the mask to check for gaps.
While the CDC says that there are still some circumstances in which a simple cloth covering or medical mask will continue to be sufficient, they gave four examples of destinations that warrant a mask upgrade. It comes down to reducing gaps, by double masking, nose wires, and knotting ear loops and tucking in the sides. According to the CDC's website, a KN95 mask is a type of filtering face mask that is often made in China and is similar to the N95 masks commonly used in the United States. On Thursday, Mumbai reported a sudden spike in Covid-19 cases after the reopening of local trains.
Another problem with surgical masks is they don't fit snugly against your face.
Kittens, puppies make for weird tennis quarantine requests
Some players have been quarantined, others have not. "That is by far my most successful tennis court in my career". Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley said players who had been in hard lockdown would be given priority.
