Julie Payette resigned as Canada's Governor General Thursday, saying that to protect the integrity of her office and for the good of the country, it was time for her to go.

The senior Liberal source said the government would prefer Payette make the decision to resign rather than forcing a conversation with the Queen in order to seek her termination.

He said the report "painted a picture that was not consistent" with that standard.

He said: 'Julie Payette ought to have resigned months ago when so many negative media reports appeared about her behavior.

LeBlanc added that a version of the report will be made public, hopefully in the next few days, but some parts need to be redacted to protect the identities of employees who spoke "on a confidential basis".

The resignations were announced as the firm conducting the review delivered it to the Privy Council Office, before the contents of the report were made public.

July 23, 2020: The Privy Council Office says it will launch an independent review of allegations that Payette mistreated past and current employees at Rideau Hall.

"I have come to the conclusion that a new Governor General should be appointed".

Payette has been the Queen's representative in Canada since October 2nd 2017.

He states that the federal government takes these issues very seriously, and that "every employee in the Government of Canada has the right to work in a safe and healthy environment". The governor general is also the commander-in-chief and gives royal assent to Canadian laws. Shortly after she took the job, it emerged that she'd been charged with second-degree assault while living in Maryland in 2011.

"We have an excellent governor general right now and I think on top of the COVID crisis, nobody is looking at any constitutional crises", Trudeau said at the time.

She called the charged unfounded, and it has since been expunged.

In a statement, Trudeau said that her resignation has been received but offered no words of gratitude, instead choosing to underscore the need for a positive working environment at all levels of government. She has previously served as the chief operating officer of the Montreal Science Centre and was also on the board of directors for the National Bank of Canada.

Although the position is largely ceremonial, the governor general presides over important state duties.
