Ontario extends at home learning from elementary students


Ontario's Premier told reporters Friday morning everything is on the table to stem the rising tide of COVID-19 cases province-wide, including a lockdown like the one back in March.

Henry said the significant uptick in cases also reflects a new reporting procedure that may have double-counted some previously reported cases.

There are now 51 active outbreaks in long-term care and assisted living.

There were 4,882 deaths reported since the pandemic began.

"However, with a significant rise in cases across our region and evidence of transmission among school-aged children, we must make this hard decision to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and keep our region safe".

There are 382 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 369 yesterday) and 244 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 250 yesterday).

Fraser Health continues to have the bulk of the new cases, with 320.

"Why hasn't he picked up the phone and asked the federal government for help in long-term care homes?" asked Schreiner, pointing to one home in Scarborough which has seen 73 resident deaths linked to COVID-19.

Another 8,755 people are under public health monitoring due to close contact with a known COVID-19 case.

Both companies are expected to complete Phase 3 clinical trials in the United States this month. The vaccine approved for use requires two doses given 21 days apart.

There are 6,118 active cases of COVID-19 in the province.

Provincial health officials said 72,900 lab tests were processed in the past 24 hours, beating yesterday's record of 71,481 tests.

The incidence rate over the past week was 14.6 new cases per 100 000 population (more than double the 7.0 rate for the previous seven days), while the percentage of tests that were positive for COVID was just shy of one per cent (0.91), almost triple the 0.35 rate the previous week.

At least 28 people from Simcoe County are hospitalized. School Mental Health Ontario will be providing mental health resources and strategies to support students during this period.
