Homes nationwide were suddenly plunged into darkness from about midnight.

The light went out in most cities, including the largest Pakistani city of Karachi, as well as Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, the capital of Islamabad, Sialkot, Sahiwal, Gujranwala, Peshawar and Bahawalpur.

The supply was expected to be restored in the next couple of hours, the sources added.

"People are urged to remain patient", the minister wrote.

"All teams have reached their respective stations..."

Some time later, the Ministry of Energy spokesperson, tweeting from the ministry's official Twitter handle, said that according to initial reports, the Guddu power plant developed a fault at 11:41pm on Saturday night.

Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Hamza Shafqaat tweeted that the National Transmission Despatch Company's lines have tripped, causing outage.

It added that Khan was overseeing the restoration work at the National Power Control Center.

"Electricity blackout in the country due to sudden drop in the frequency of power transmission system from 50 to 0 in less than a second", it said.

"Systematic restoration of power will be initiated soon", representatives from the Energy Ministry said. In 2015, around 80% of the country was left without power after a key transmission line broke down. "We are told that the technical fault will be restored shortly, Insha'Allah", he said.

This is a developing story that is being updated as the situation evolves.
