Indian tractors aim to outmuscle tanks on Republic Day

Requesting commuters to avoid routes of the parade, the Delhi Police has said that metro services will remain available at all metro stations in the city on Tuesday. Several people in the National Capital Region formed human chains and distributed food and water to the protesters. While few cops are sitting on chairs, others are trying to bring down certain flags which the protestors have hoisted. The protesters had also vandalised a DTC bus earlier. The cops resorted to lathicharge and fired teargas shells to disperse the crowd.

The farmers, who have camped at various border points around the capital for two months, had permission to demonstrate after the completion of an annual military parade to mark Republic Day, a major public holiday in India.

As tens of thousands of farmers in India on Tuesday drove a convoy of tractors festooned with bright flags to protest against the government's new agricultural laws, their counterparts thousands of miles away in the United Kingdom posted images on social media to express their solidarity with them. Local residents stood on both sides of the roads at various locations showering flower petals on them.

In a statement, Delhi police accused those who diverged from the agreed routes of "violence and destruction". "We even visit Red Fort to see the tableaux that participated in the parade or try and catch a glimpse of it as it crossed old Dellhi but we have been told it is different this year", said Rizwan, a resident of Old Delhi.

"But some groups of farmers did not relent and started moving towards the Outer Ring Road breaking police barricades", an official said.

"Barricades will be opened and farmers will be allowed to enter Delhi and hold their march", he said.

This year's Republic Day was scaled down due to the coronavirus pandemic.
