Containing China is 'mission impossible', Beijing warns Biden

"The facts show that to contain China is mission impossible, and will only end up in shooting yourself in the foot", warned defence ministry spokesman Wu Qian on Thursday.

Taiwan, claimed by China as its own territory, reported multiple Chinese fighter jets and bombers entering its southwestern air defence identification zone last weekend, prompting Washington to urge Beijing to stop pressuring Taiwan, Reuters reports.

The Chinese action came as a US carrier battle group led by the USS Theodore Roosevelt entered the South China Sea Saturday. US observers said China was intent on testing President Joe Biden, who had been sworn in just days before. The U.S. military said its objective there is to demonstrate support for "freedom of the seas". Although Chinese experts have said Beijing remains reluctant to risk open conflict with the United States, the PLA's new muscle is forcing the United States to adjust its posture and strategy in Asia.

Beijing is concerned about perceived growing close links between Taiwan and the US. According to vessel tracking data, it passed through the Bashi Canal.

To China's annoyance, statements in support of Taiwan have continued with the new administration.

The US Navy regularly conducts what it calls "freedom of navigation" operations by ships close to some of the islands China occupies, asserting freedom of access to global waterways.

"Sino-US military relations are now at a new historic starting point" with the arrival of the Biden administration, said Wu, urging the US to adopt a "non-confrontational, mutually respectful, win-win mentality".

"Nothing has changed about the department's commitment" to the Taiwan Relations Act and the Three Communiques about Taiwan, he said in a Pentagon news conference.

Beijing is also locked in a dispute with a number of its neighbours over control of the South China Sea.

China has cautioned that endeavors by Taiwan to look for autonomy "signifies war".

"Let me just say that I also believe that President Trump was right in taking a tougher approach to China", Antony Blinken, Mr Biden's choice for Secretary of State, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during his confirmation hearing last week.

Chinese warplanes simulated missile strikes on a nearby U.S. aircraft carrier during an apparent incursion into the southwestern zone of Taiwan's air defences last Sunday, the Financial Times cited unnamed intelligence sources as saying.
