CDC officials said anyone with a history of anaphylaxis who gets the vaccine should be observed for 30 minutes afterwards, as people who previously had anaphylaxis are at risk of having it again. In addition, the officials said, the MMWR report from December 14-23 focuses on the Pfizer vaccine, since the Moderna vaccine was not available until December 21.

Nancy Messonnier, MD, director of CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, emphasized that these events were rare and that the benefits of COVID-19 vaccination outweighed the risks.

Of those 21 who experienced anaphylaxis after being vaccinated, 17 had a history of similar reactions to other vaccines or medications, the CDC said.

Statistics so far would indicate that if you're allergic to anything, wait before getting the COVID vaccine.

Anaphylaxis is a serious, life-threatening allergic reaction and requires immediate medical attention, according to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology. In most cases, it can be treated quickly with the drug epinephrine, or the "epi pen".

One preliminary hypothesis for the reactions is the presence of the compound polyethylene glycol (PEG), which has never before been used in an approved vaccine, but is found in everyday products including laxatives, shampoos and toothpaste.

Nineteen of the cases (90 percent) occurred in females, and the median onset time of symptoms was 13 minutes but ranged from two to 150 minutes. Symptoms can include skin rash, nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing and shock.

More than half of all major hospital trusts in England now have more Covid-19 patients than at the peak of the first wave. Scientific advisers believe the true number of daily infections is also now higher than during the first wave.

Vaccine facilities are also urged to be prepared to treat patients for anaphylaxis and have epi pens available in case they are needed.

Anyone who has a severe reaction to a first dose should not get a second dose of the vaccine, the CDC says.

On the conclusion of the mock drill for the vaccine's distribution at District Hospital in Phase 6 of Mohali, Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu said that the exercise conducted across the state has been successful and the state is fully-equipped to administer about four lakh doses of the vaccine everyday.

For comparison, the rate of anaphylaxis for the flu vaccine is 1.3 cases per 1 million doses administered.

They noted that, as of now, 29 confirmed cases of anaphylaxis are reported with the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines.
