The Palaszczuk Government on Friday placed all residents in the Greater Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, Redlands and Moreton areas after a hotel cleaner tested positive to the highly contagious United Kingdom strain of coronavirus.

"Genome sequencing is underway, however it's likely to be the United Kingdom variant", she said.

Of the woman's 147 close contacts, 112 have tested negative with the rest of the tests pending.

Dr Young said the restrictions mirrored those in other states, insisting it was important that the Greater Brisbane region came out of the lockdown "carefully and sensibly".

More than the Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Ipswich, Redland and Logan council areas are in lockdown until 6pm Monday as a result.

A three-day lockdown of Australia's third-largest city of Brisbane will be lifted after no new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 were recorded over the weekend.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced earlier that Queensland has recorded zero new cases overnight.

Private gatherings can have up to 20 people in homes and public spaces.

The region was plunged into lockdown on Friday, following the cleaner's case. "Because it is highly contagious", she said.

An urgent public health alert was issued late on Saturday evening, ordering anyone who had visited Coles at Sunnybank Hills Shoppingtown on January 5, 7.30am-8am, or Woolworths Calamvale North on January 3, 11am-noon to get tested and quarantine for 14 days, regardless of the test result.

"So it's really important that anyone who has attended one of those three particular venues. comes forward as soon as possible".

She urged people to get out and support businesses while abiding by the new rules.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says this is good news for Queensland cricket fans.

He said the police probe into the quarantine breach was crucial so that the overall system can be strengthened and future mistakes minimised.

Ms Courtney said people who arrived in the 24 hours after the high-risk declaration was made won't have to pay for their quarantine costs.

Four new cases were found in hotel quarantine.

Two of those people had travelled to the United Kingdom, but Dr Young said it was too early to know if they had the more contagious strain of the virus.

Queensland officials have this morning confirmed that the lockdown will be lifted tonight as planned, but there are several rules that will stay in place for at least the next ten days.

She had arrived in Melbourne from the United Kingdom on Boxing Day and tested positive to the virus during the first day of her stay in hotel quarantine.

She then flew into Brisbane at 11pm on January 5 on a Jetstar JQ570 flight.

"The three days was the initial lockdown which was recommended".

However, once arriving back in Brisbane the woman still tested positive to Covid-19 prompting the protocols for hotel quarantine to change.

She defended the measures as "definitely not an over-reaction".

'As our friends from Queensland have pointed out, that was totally in line with Australian and worldwide protocols, ' he said.
