Netherlands bans flights from Britain due to coronavirus risk

The travel ban comes as new documents show the latest Covid-19 variant to be more infectious than previous incarnations of the virus.

It is not now clear when the flight ban will come into affect and how long it will last for.

For Germany's Federal Ministry of Health is blocking flights is a "serious option", new agency AFP reported.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo also announced on December 20 that flights from the United Kingdom and Eurostar trains will be banned for a minimum of 24 hours starting midnight as a precautionary measure.

Futher afield in Israel, passengers who arrived from London on Sunday were taken in three buses with a police escort, from Tel Aviv's Ben-Gurion airport to a hotel designated as a coronavirus quarantine facility as the government weighed whether to halt flights to and from Britain completely.

Belgium has imposed a 24-hour ban on flights and rail links while it assesses the situation.

The deal would maintain the central bank's ability to set up emergency lending programmes without congressional approval, the Journal said, but the Fed would require approval to restart existing CARES Act programmes once they expire at the end of this year.

The restrictions come into force at midnight on Sunday.

Why is this all happening?

U.S. President-elect Joe Biden's nominee for U.S. surgeon general said Sunday that the emergence of the new strain doesn't change the public health guidance on precautions for reducing the spread of the virus, such as wearing masks, social distancing and washing hands.

Susan Hopkins of Public Health England said that while the variant has been circulating since September, it wasn't until this week that officials felt they had enough evidence to declare that it has higher transmissibility than other circulating viruses.

At London's St. Pancras International station, the terminal for Eurostar, thousands of travellers tried to secure places on trains. "Please do not come to the ports of Dover or Newhaven during this time as you will not be allowed to travel".

The new restrictions are due to be announced later today. Legal issues on the travel ban are being examined by officials.

"People should carefully consider whether they need to travel overseas and follow the rules in their tier".

Under the new "stay at home" order - covering around a third of the population of England - people in Tier 4 will be told they should not stay away from home overnight and people from outside will be advised not to visit Tier 4 areas.
