Joe Biden reveals former rival as his pick for transport secretary

As more and more frontline healthcare workers across the nation received a shot of the increasingly widely distributed Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, the remarks from PEOTUS came this morning as Biden formally announced his ex-primary rival Pete Buttigieg as his pick for U.S. Transportation Secretary.

In 2011, Buttigieg was first elected mayor of South Bend, a Midwestern city of almost 102,000 residents best known for its close connection with the University of Notre Dame.

"I can remember watching the news at 17 years old, in IN, and seeing a story about an appointee of President Clinton named to be an ambassador, attacked and denied a vote in the Senate because he was gay. Just as important, I saw how those limits, could be challenged". As NewNowNext previously reported, at the top of his announcement speech, he thanked his husband, Chasten Buttigieg, for "giving me the strength to do this and the grounding to be myself as we go".

But Buttigieg faces a tough confirmation fight among Senate Republicans.

"Two decades later, I can't help but think of a 17-year-old somewhere who might be watching us right now, somebody who wonders whether and where they belong in the world, or even in their own family".

Buttigieg told Biden he's "eager to do everything in my power to see that this administration succeeds".

He also made light of what became a common joke in D.C.: promises by the Trump administration to do an infrastructure week, only to get upstaged by other presidential events or tweets.

The Secretary of Transportation position is now held by Elaine Chao.

Richard Grenell, Trump's former Director of National Intelligence, is also openly gay but he was named to the post in an acting capacity and was never confirmed by the Senate.

On Friday, a senior Iranian official has condemned Morocco's normalisation of ties with Israel as a " betrayal of Islam ". Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh is now based in Qatar, but there was no immediate confirmation that he and Abbas would meet.

A U.S. Navy veteran who served as a reservist in Afghanistan, Buttigieg had also been considered to head the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Biden and Harris, the first Black woman and first person of Indian heritage to serve as vice president, have pledged to name the "most diverse" cabinet in USA history and reports of Buttigieg's nomination were welcomed by LGBTQ groups. The average age of Biden nominees to date is 59. "And the question of how America will look by the middle of this century, the competitiveness of our economy, the security of our climate", Buttigieg said. While well-liked, most Democrats believed Buttigieg lacked the needed experience to lead the country.

He said he has "a personal love of transportation", recounting 1,000-mile-long train trips on Amtrak while in college, and said he proposed to his now-husband, Chasten, in an airport terminal.

"More than once as a college student I would convince a friend to travel almost 1,000 miles back to IN with me on Amtrak".

Biden says there will be more people of color and more women in his Cabinet than any other before, including the first Black defense secretary and the first Latino to head the Department of Health and Human Services.

Biden spoke on Wednesday about how the United States lags behind other nations in terms of infrastructure quality, and his plans to create jobs and rebuild crumbling roads and bridges.

His candidacy represented an evolution in American politics and transformed what was possible for an LGBT+ candidate.

A day after pledging to taking the coronavirus vaccine in public, Joe Biden on Wednesday sought to assure the public that the injections are truly good for them and help is coming from the federal government. "And now comes a historic opportunity".
