Diego Costa agrees to end contract early — Athletic Madrid

Now, the website makes no mention of any bids as yet or even any contact with Costa, who only officially became a free agent today, and it's worth pointing out this article was published on the Spanish website on Monday.

Atletico Madrid have terminated Diego Costa's contract at the Spanish side, freeing him up as a free transfer for the January transfer window.

An Atletico statement said the 32-year-old, whose contract ran out in June 2021, had asked several days ago to leave the club immediately for personal reasons and on Tuesday he signed his release from the deal.

Atletico manager Diego Simeone said Costa had given "everything" to the club. I can only imagine that wherever he goes he will do well because he is a fighter. "We want to thank him, Diego has given us everything as a player and as a human".

This announcement brings to an end Costa's second spell at Atletico, which has been less successful than the first.

Costa started 43 La Liga matches since returning to Atletico, scoring 12 goals.

He began this campaign by testing positive for the coronavirus in September, returned to face a month-long absence with a hamstring injury in October, and was diagnosed with deep-vein thrombosis in November.
