China lands its Moon rocks in Inner Mongolia

While many conversations around China and the United States in space have focused on competitive, even military, aspects of a new "space race", some in the United States admit that space exploration could be one arena where both countries could cooperate, and perhaps even use it to mitigate other tensions in the relationship.

The China National Space Administration, typically secretive with its missions, showed growing confidence in its space program, with live broadcasts of the rocket launch and return of its sample capsule, which glowed bright white from its heat in the infrared cameras that spotted it.

The mission of the lunar exploration project Chang'e-5 was a complete success. Prior to launch, China had reportedly targeted collecting up to 4kg of moon rocks in a bid to carry out prolonged experiments and studies. After a week's transit time, the spacecraft's orbiter sent a lander down to the lunar surface on December 1st.

The mission marks a moments occasion for China, as it makes it only the third country to successfully bring samples back from the Moon, after only the U.S. and the former USSR.

The official Xinhua news agency described the Chang'e-5 mission as one of the most challenging and complicated in China's aerospace history.

"With this successful mission, China will be more confident of its own technologies", Chen Lan, an independent analyst at, which specialises in China's space programme, told AFP. The claim to the moon harks back to the space race of the 1960s and 1970s, an era that led to unprecedented achievements made by both Russian Federation and US in space missions while trying to compete with each other from both nuclear and ideological fronts.
