Under Georgia law, the audit requires a by-hand inspection of random samples of official ballots and uses statistical sampling techniques to confirm the results of the election. There are no examples of similar recounts that have overturned leads of that magnitude.

Raffensperger has been under fire from fellow Republicans. U.S. Sens. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler called for Raffensperger, who is also a Republican, to resign from his post.

Both senators are set for runoff elections January 5.

Raffensperger said his office will investigate all claims of voter irregularities.

Sterling had said Wednesday that the ballots would be counted by machine.
