"With isolation or quarantine requirements changing for travellers from South Australia in a number of states and territories, we have already seen a number of customers booked to travel to and from Adelaide in the next few days take up this option", Qantas said in a statement.

Australia closed its borders to worldwide travellers in March but has allowed citizens and permanent residents to return home if they undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine in a hotel. Victoria accounts for most of Australia's almost 28,000 coronavirus infections and 907 deaths but has reported no new cases for several weeks after coming out of a lengthy lockdown.

Neighboring Victoria state, venue for the Boxing Day test, recorded a 17th straight day without any new cases on Monday after battling a major outbreak in Melbourne earlier this year.

The next 24-hours will be crucial in identifying the source of the "potentially disastrous" outbreak. By Monday, case numbers had jumped to 17.

"It's obvious that the highest risk in Australia right now is this risk of [virus] importation in our quarantine hotels", South Australia's chief health officer Nicola Spurrier said on Monday.

Four other members of the family are showing symptoms and are awaiting coronavirus testing results.
