An administration official anonymously revealed to the Associated Press that Hicks tested positive after traveling with Trump to a rally on Wednesday.

He earlier announced he and the First Lady were going into quarantine after Hope Hicks, a senior advisor who recently traveled with the president, tested positive.

Hicks, 31, is the closest aid of the president to have tested positive with coronavirus. Hicks had tested positive, saying: "I just went for a test and we'll see what happens".

Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Judge Amy Coney Barrett, who was with him and many others on Saturday and has been on Capitol Hill meeting with lawmakers, also tested negative, the White House said.

"Whether we quarantine or whether we have it, I don't know", Trump said earlier in the evening.

Trump said he and the First Lady will quarantine as they await their results. But nonetheless, Trump attended a fundraiser at his golf club in Bedminster later that day - just hours before testing positive himself. Health professionals say mask-wearing is one of the key things people can do to help prevent the spread of the virus.

Trump, a Republican, urged U.S. states to re-open shuttered economies even as the number of cases continued to soar and knocked Democratic governors for putting tough measures into place to bring the virus under control.

Ms Hicks, the youngest communications director in history, became known as something of a Trump "whisperer" during her first stint in the White House.
