United Nations food agency wins 2020 Nobel Peace Prize

"In a world of plenty, it is unconscionable that hundreds of millions go to bed each night hungry", Guterres said.

His congratulatory message was contained in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, titled "President Buhari congratulates UN World Food Programme on 2020 Nobel Prize for Peace".

"I think this is the first time in my life I've been without words", David Beasley, a former SC governor who has been WFP's executive director since 2017, told the Associated Press from Niger.

"We highly value our partnership and hope that this award will stand to remind world leaders of the challenges that lay ahead and the humanitarian organisations that stand prepared to meet them".

"It's the first time in my life I've actually been speechless, I really can't believe it", he told CNN's Connect the World from Niger. This is unbelievable. And Wow! Wow! Wow!

As the USA woke up Friday to the Nobel announcement, there was no immediate comment from Trump - who has said he would like to win the award himself.

Little symbolizes global connectedness more than the WFP, long the U.N.'s logistics expert, which in responding to the pandemic launched an extraordinary emergency aid delivery service as most global flights were grounded.

He said some of his colleagues have lost their lives in the line of duty.

It was a "proud moment" for the UN World Food Programme and "nothing short of a feat" after the organisation won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, its spokesman said.

The Rome-based United Nations agency has long specialized in getting assistance to some of the world's most risky and precarious places, from air-dropping food in South Sudan and Syria to creating an emergency delivery service that kept aid flowing even as pandemic restrictions grounded commercial flights. "United Nations agencies like WFP take on the toughest challenges in the world and deserve everyone's support", said Dr Coonrod, who is also Coordinator and co-founder of the Movement for Community-led Development.

Trump willing to debate Joe Biden if events are postponed
The commission said its decision was made to "protect the health and safety of all involved with the second presidential debate". However, shortly after the change was announced, Trump said he would refuse to participate in an interview with FOX Business .

"In the face of the pandemic, the World Food Programme has demonstrated an impressive ability to intensify its efforts". Their work has never been more important or necessary.

Information on its database was not made public for 50 years.

Congratulating WFP, Oxfam International's interim Executive Director, Chema Vera told IPS it is a timely and urgent recognition to the work that WFP does in fighting the scourge of global hunger. Past year alone it assisted residents of 88 countries suffering from acute hunger and food insecurity. "Today is a reminder that food security, peace, and stability go together".

"The global problem of hunger is increasing and so is the global problem of violent conflict", Smith said.

Climate campaigners could also get the nod, 13 years after the UN's climate science advisory panel IPCC and former U.S. vice president Al Gore won.

Two thirds of the WFP's operations take place in war torn areas, where people are three times more likely to be malnourished.

"It's a call to action to not let anyone die from starvation, it's a call to action that we've got to save and help our friends, our brothers, our sisters around the world", he said.

Earlier this week, the Nobel Committee unveiled the recipients of the prizes for medicine, physics, chemistry and literature.

The WFP plays a key role in global cooperation in making food security as a tool to establish peace. In past years, the WFP, like many other United Nations organizations, has been forced to appeal for money to finance aid operations such as supplying food to North African refugee camps and to victims of the war in Yemen. They would often turn up to talks with the same small red cup that destitute children in some African countries used to collect porridge for their only daily meal.
