India’s Mumbai faces widespread power outage, train services hit

"Power supply to remaining consumers is being restored in a phased manner".

State Energy Minister Nitin Raut said the authorities were working to resolve complaints and would restore the power soon.

Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai I S Chahal has asked officers to get enough supply of diesel for at least eight hours so that there is no power failures in hospitals especially intensive care unit (ICUs) and asked disaster control personnel to keep handy a mobile diesel generator set as a backup if the power disruption lasts beyond two hours.

Adani Electricity tweeted: "There is a major power grid failure due to which supply is affected in most areas of Mumbai".

A major power breakdown brought Mumbai and parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region of Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts to the knees on Monday, owing to a major grid failure, officials said here. "Our teams are working on the restoration of supply and we expect to complete restoration within the next 1 hour", said Adani Electricity on Twitter. "We regret the inconvenience caused", it added.

Certain lines of Central and Western Railways have been restored after the power failure.

Many commuters who were stuck in the trains due to the grid failure have been rescued. Services between Churchgate and Borivali stations stand suspended at the moment. "Commuters are requested not to panic", it said.

Still, social media was splashed with pictures of people stranded inside unlit trains and in railway stations.

Power outages were reported from suburbs like Thane, Panvel, Dombivili and Kalyan as well, along with those in the island city and the suburbs. But sources in Tata said there was additional load in the system, of 900 MW, and due to tripping, there was a load drop in the Mumbai system.

Tata Power shared on Twitter: "At 10.10 am there were simultaneous substation tripping in MSETCL's Kalwa, Kharghar causing a huge dip in frequency in the Mumbai transmission system which led to tripping of Mumbai power supply". Top officials from Power System Operation Corporation (POSOCO) said, "There is no grid problem, only the Mumbai system is affected".

The city's two stock exchanges, as well as Mumbai's global airport, did not experience any problems. "Restoration under process", tweeted Maharashtra minister Dr Jitendra Awhad.
