The rest of the board of directors have stepped down alongside Bartomeu, and an election will be scheduled within the next 90 days to appoint a new president.

That triggered a referendum on Bartomeu's position at the club.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned from the club on Tuesday (Oct 27) ahead of a vote of no confidence that was due to be held next month after some 20,000 fans signed a petition demanding that he step down.

"I can announce some extraordinary news", Bartomeu said. "[On Monday], the board of directors approved the requirements to participate in a future European Super League, a project promoted by the big clubs in Europe which will guarantee the future financial sustainability of the club".

"And we have accepted the future Club World Cup format".

"The European Super League will make it so the club can remain being one of the members".

He said Thursday night it would be a "long, methodical process" to assess the damage caused by the fire. Colorado Governor Jared Polis met with evacuees and fire managers as he toured the area on Friday.

At least five clubs from the Premier League could be named as European Premier League participants, with Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham said to have been approached.

Bartomeu, who has also been widely criticised after talisman forward Lionel Messi requested a transfer following the Champions League humiliation, was facing a vote of no confidence from the club's "socios".

Bartomeu opted to leave rather than ask club members to vote on his future after a debate with local government in Catalonia on whether voting in person would be safe in the current pandemic.

Bartomeu called the government's decision irresponsible in his speech, while thanking the club and saying he could not have resigned earlier.

"I hope that time will add value to our assets".
