The YouTube channels belonging to Modi and the ruling BJP may also have been compromised.

Tweets were posted from the account asking the followers to donate to the PM National Relief Fund through cryptocurrency. The social media platform has confirmed this.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Minister of Railways and Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, and Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat have already addressed the virtual summit on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday respectively.

The crypto theft attempt levelled through the Twitter account breach brings back memories of the massive Twitter breach in July, which saw accounts of numerous notable personalities, including Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Barack Obama and more, being hacked.

The hackers eventually made themselves known, however, sending out one final tweet admitting "Yes this account is hacked by John Wick" - apparently a reference to the action film franchise starring Keanu Reeves. The tweet has a quote of PM Modi from his monthly radio programme "Mann Ki Baat". The tweets urging for donations and other related tweets have now disappeared.

United States-India Strategic Partnership Forum President Mukesh Aghi had said on Tuesday that the event was a marker of US-India relations in the present times. Prime Minister Modi's personal Twitter account was safe at the time.

It should not be confused with Modi's personal Twitter account, @narendramodi, which has over 61 million followers.

India's Ministry of Information Technology did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Elaborating on the support being provided to key sectors, the PM said the production linked incentive schemes that have been launched for industries like mobile, electronics and pharmaceuticals had been very well received.

On Wednesday, U.S. Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., the ranking member of the House Oversite and Reform Committee, sent a letter to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey raising concerns about the hijacking of the accounts and another case involving former employees accessing sensitive user data, according to The Hill.
