HarmonyOS. Huawei’s operating system on smartphones from 2021 - Observe

Huawei's consumer business group CEO Richard Yu and Wang Chenglu, president of Huawei's consumer business group's software department gave an update on Thursday to the company's annual developer conference in the southern Chinese city of Dongguan.

This trade blacklist cut Huawei off from suppliers such as Google, which had supplied Huawei smartphones with the Android operating system and Google Mobile Services, such as Gmail and YouTube.

Although Huawei's Harmony OS will be accepted in China smoothly, it's hard to imagine how they will convince smartphone makers and sellers from other countries to use Harmony. How big is the impact of the USA and other countries turning away from Huawei?

Soon the company will no longer be able to buy chips from most major semiconductor companies, or even build its own chips using technology developed by U.S. companies. Elliot Zaagman, a co-host of the China Tech Investor Podcast, shared his insights.

In August, the USA expanded earlier restrictions aimed at preventing Huawei from obtaining semiconductors without a special license. He said a beta test version of the HarmonyOS 2.0 software development kit is being made available for developers today, with a smartphone version of the SDK set to follow in December.

Technically Huawei can continue shipping phones with the open source version of Google Android.

As of today, HarmonyOS is open for 128KB to 128MB IoT devices such as smart TVs, portable devices, cars and more. The move is not surprising at all, considering that Huawei even surpassed Samsung in the number of sold smartphones in the last several months. However, it seems unlikely that Huawei will bring new features to the open-source version of Android (what is now found on the Huawei P40 Pro) and HarmonyOS meaning those who want the latest and greatest functionality will probably have to turn their back on Android.

After US Govt forcefully stopped Google from providing software, hardware and technical services to Huawei, they had no other option it seems. The HarmonyOS 2.0 operating system and enriched applications and tools supporting various devices enable Huawei to establish its own ecosystem in the face of a strict technology export ban by U.S. authorities.

Huawei said the mobile applications integrated with HMS so far have exceeded 96,000.

Washington in early August called on American and foreign app developers to boycott Huawei's platform.

World's 2nd biggest smartphone maker: Huawei has just taken the biggest gamble of their lifetime.

Globally, Huawei has more than 1.8 million application developers and 490 million active users.
