GP surgeries and pharmacies across Sefton are starting to vaccinate thousands of people against flu, whilst ensuring that coronavirus social distancing measures are followed. Indeed, if everyone masks up and gets vaccinated (as well as stays home when they are sick), this could be the healthiest winter our nation ever has experienced.

The health system is working to provide the free flu vaccine to 30 million people, the highest number on record.

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show during the 2019-2020 USA flu season there were as many as 56,000 cases, requiring up to 740,000 hospitalizations. During 2018-2019, 49 percent of the US population chose to get a flu vaccine, and the CDC estimates they prevented a projected 4.4 million influenza illnesses, 58,000 influenza-associated hospitalizations, and 3,500 flu deaths. "This is to make sure we can vaccinate the patients who have already booked their appointments with us". "Play it safe. Should I get a flu shot?

A major flu outbreak would not only overwhelm hospitals this fall and winter, but also likely overwhelm a person who might contract both at once.

Unfortunately, some people can become infected with a flu virus a flu vaccine is created to protect against, despite getting vaccinated.

Children aged two and three (on 31 August 2020) and all primary school children (reception to year six) will be offered the vaccine in nasal spray form. Some older people and people with certain chronic illnesses may develop less immunity after vaccination. Vaccinations should continue to be offered throughout the flu season, even into January or later, the CDC recommends.

Since August, demand for flu vaccinations at Primary Health clinics is up almost 50% compared to this time previous year. Some cases are severe, but in most people, it can range from no symptoms to mild cases like the common cold, making it hard to tell the difference without getting a test.

Doctors have seen a decline in immunizations, health screenings and other types of patient visits, because people are afraid they'll contract COVID-19 if they go to a doctor, Eltaki said.
