Apple also took the wraps off a new high-end watch model, a next-generation iPad and a couple of new subscription services during a virtual event held Tuesday.
The Watch SE will also support Apple's new Family Setup, which allows parents to set up and manage Apple Watches for their kids, including features like message monitoring and location alerts. Apple Watch SE features the same accelerometer, gyroscope, and always-on altimeter as Apple Watch Series 6, and with the latest motion sensors and microphone, it offers robust health and safety capabilities including fall detection, Emergency SOS, global emergency calling, and the Noise app.
Health has always been a big focus for the Watch, and it's evident that Apple appreciates how important that is for customers.
That capability is powered by the Series 6's new blood oxygen sensor, which uses a series of photodiodes and infrared LEDs to measure your oxygen saturation-the amount of oxygen in your blood cells-as you breathe. The Series 6's always-on display is 2.5 times brighter than the one on its predecessor and there's now support for 5GHz WiFi networks. Apple is also teaming up with two research organizations to study how blood oxygen levels can be used to predict or help manage certain heart conditions.
Apple Watch SE vs Apple Watch 6: What are the differences?
Unlike the ECG feature which was announced a while back but is still not available to Australians, the Blood Oxygen level check will be available at launch.
Trump on TikTok: 'I'm not extending deadlines'
According to Mr Trump, TikTok and other Chinese apps that collect data on United States citizens pose a national security threat. The app, however, has sued the Trump administration in response to what it said is a "heavily politicized" executive order .
Apple has also upgraded the iPad Air to Wi-Fi 6 and claims to have equipped the tablet with a 60% faster LTE modem than the one it included in last year's iPad Air. And as before, watch faces are shareable.
Despite the cheap pricing, the Watch SE comes with an array of features that are found on the Watch Series 6 such as built-in accelerometer, gyroscope, and always-on altimeter, as well as sleep tracking and hand-washing detection.
Apple also announced a second new Watch. You can order both today and availability starts this Friday, September 18. Like the affordable iPhone, the Apple Watch SE combines the best of Series 6 with affordability. Fitness+ starts at $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year. (No iPhone 12 yet, sorry.) If you didn't have time to watch the whole presentation, read on for the highlights.
Fitness+ is one of the services being incorporated into Apple One, which bundles Apple's various subscription services into one package.
Apple is also continuing to sell the Apple Watch Series 3 for $199, giving consumers a pretty healthy lineup of price points for jumping into wearables.
