The Trump campaign in a statement on Monday said, "Joe Biden has been a failure in the Washington Swamp for a half century, so no one should be surprised when Swamp creatures gather to protect one of their own". His harsh attacks against Democrats who are trying to expand mail voting and demonstrators protesting deaths in police custody, for example, often delight his die-hard loyalists.

Some of the planned remarks for the evening program were prerecorded, while others were to be delivered live from a Washington auditorium. The Democratic programming included a well-received roll call video montage featuring diverse officials from across the nation.

They cited Trump's "corruption, destruction of democracy, blatant disregard for moral decency, and urgent need to get the country back on course" as reasons for the move, according to a Biden campaign statement. The Republicans, overwhelmingly white, spoke from the ballroom floor.

Lee is a member of a scaled-down delegation of just six Utah delegates at the Charlotte convention because of the pandemic. The Democratic Party officially nominated Joe Biden at their convention last week, in a largely virtual affair nominally held in Wisconsin.

Mecklenburg County Health Director Gibbie Harris said she had "shared concern about the lack of mask wearing and social distancing in the room" with RNC staff and had "been assured that they are working hard to address these issues".

"We will be taking our case to the American people this week", Pence said soon after he and Trump were re-nominated by the party for the November election against the Biden-Harris Democratic ticket.

Unlike the Democratic roll call last week, which presented a country-crossing mosaic highlighting America's diverse population and varied landscapes, the Republican delegates - almost all of whom were white - attended the convention in person and spoke in front of a white backdrop featuring the convention hashtag.

She had admitted during a tearful court appearance to paying $15,000 to boost her daughter's SAT college entrance exam score. Loughlin also will serve two years of supervised release and must perform 100 hours of community service.

"In Utah, we love the Founding Fathers and we love the idea of four more years" of Trump, Lee said.

For both sides, it's an unconventional convention year.

Convention speakers include Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Kentucky Republican Senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, and ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, along with several Trump family members including First Lady Melania, son Eric, and daughter Ivanka. He will deliver his formal acceptance speech on Wednesday.

But they will not vote on a new 2020 platform, after a unanimous vote to forgo one this year.

Democrats were content to let Trump's unfiltered message drive the day.

But that promise belies the dark undertones of Trump's frequent depictions of a country where Democrats are allowing cities to be overrun by protesters, and his post-election vision of a Biden presidency every bit as dire as the warnings from Democrats last week about a second Trump term.
