Trudeau turns down White House invitation

While he has not explicitly given a reason for his absence, Trudeau's missed attendance at the meeting comes amid the COVID-19 pandemic and as the number of cases in the USA continues to rise.

While Trudeau remains in Ottawa, Lopez Obrador and Trump will meet at the White House to mark the start of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which went into effect July 1.

"Despite recent discussions about Canada's possible participation, the Prime Minister will be in Ottawa this week to hold scheduled cabinet meetings and take part in a long-planned meeting of parliament", his office said.

Trudeau previously said he was not sure about attending, citing tensions over possible USA tariffs on Canadian aluminum, Reuters reported.

The trip to Washington will be Lopez Obrador's first official overseas visit, and he will meet Trump on Wednesday.

President Trump sent a handwritten note to over a dozen members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus informing them that he would not cancel his meeting on Wednesday with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, as they had requested.
