Pac-12 moves to conference-only model for 4 fall sports

The Ivy League announced Wednesday that it will not hold sports during the fall semester, becoming the first Division I conference to suspend its football season this year.

A day after Greg Sankey said he is "prepared that optimism is not reality" when it comes to the upcoming college football season, Sankey released a statement preaching patience.

"The really complicated financial issue, probably the one we're most likely going to be in, is that we have other sports (other than football) but we don't have the revenue to cover them", she said then, "and that's very complicated because of the way our athletic department revenue structure work". If the Big 12 chooses to follow the Big Ten's footsteps, the Sooners will miss out on matchups with MSU, Tennessee on September 12 and Army on September 26. "With the Pac-12-s decision to move to a conference-only schedule, we will do our best to adjust".

"Obviously with three Pac-12 teams on our football schedule, today's decision affects us more than others", Athletics Director David Matlin said.

In the news release, the conference said students who opt to not participate in sports due to concerns over COVID-19 will not lose their scholarships, and "will remain in good standing with their team".

The Pac-12 announced on Friday that it would go to a conference-only 2020-21 season for all fall sports - including football, men's soccer, women's soccer and women's volleyball. Women's soccer, the reigning national champions, had planned to travel to Kentucky and Vanderbilt, while the men's soccer team had planned to host Maryland and Akron prior to Pac-12 play - but now those games must be canceled.

"The University of Notre Dame has informed the Packers that the game scheduled for October 3 at Lambeau Field has been canceled due to the pandemic and the Big 10 Conference reducing their schedule to conference-only games".

"Over the last few months, our conference has prepared numerous scenarios related to the fall athletics season", ACC commissioner John Swofford said.

Southern California was also scheduled to open the season against Alabama at AT&T Stadium near Dallas. According to CBS Sports, the Athletic Director's in the conference are scheduled to meet with Commissioner Sankey on Monday. "What that looks like is to be determined". The football team is now the only Stanford team in its entirety partaking in voluntary workouts on campus. But in the following weeks, a number of schools have announced coronavirus cases within their programs, and some have had to temporarily pause workouts.
