Pac-12 implementing conference-only schedule for football, fall sports

The scheduling change would eliminate each team's three non-conference games, while adding an additional Big Ten opponent.

Before the announcement, IU football was scheduled to play three nonconference opponents this upcoming season: Western Kentucky University, Ball State University and the University of CT.

The Pac-12 announced that its schools will protect athletes' scholarships during the pandemic.

NIU football players returned to campus for voluntary workouts in groups of 10 on June 15.

The Pac-12 announced late Friday afternoon that it will go conference-only in all fall sports, including football.

Details on what a conference-only schedule would look like will be announced no later than July 31.

The NCAA shorted its member schools $375 million in scheduled payouts due to the cancellation of the NCAA Tournament and schools across the country have been hit with massive budget shortfalls as college sports remain on hold.

There are six men's soccer programs in the Pac-12 and the full 12-team allotment in women's soccer. Instead, the Sun Devils, as it stands now, now kick off the season September 26 at USC, a game that could have some serious Pac-12 South implications right off the bat.

There has been deep unease that the pandemic will deal a blow to fall sports after wiping out hundreds of games, including March Madness, this past spring. The Conference comprises 12 leading USA universities - the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Colorado, the University of Oregon, Oregon State University, Stanford University, the University of Southern California, the University of Utah, the University of Washington and Washington State University.

"So we just wanted to make sure that this was the next logical step to always rely on our medical experts to keep our student-athletes at the center of all of our decisions and make sure that they are as healthy as they possibly can be from a mental, a physical, an emotional health and wellness standpoint".

Like Hawaii, BYU now isn't scheduled to play its first game until October because its first four games, two against Big Ten teams and two more against Pac-12 teams, are now gone. Guarantee-game revenue can account for more than 5% of a school's overall athletic budget.
