Jimmie Johnson is 'blown away' by positive COVID-19 test, is asymptomatic

The 44-year-old Johnson said he would be watching from his home in Aspen, Colorado. Johnson and the couple's two daughters were both tested as a precaution.

"Jimmie has handled this situation like the champion he is", said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports.

"While this circumstance is very disappointing, I am heading to appear again completely ready to gain races and set ourselves in playoff rivalry".

He will miss Sunday's Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

In Johnson's absence, Justin Allgaier will drive the No. 48 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE for Hendrick Motorsports on July 5 at Indianapolis.

Jimmie Johnson became the first NASCAR driver to announce he had tested positive for the coronavirus on Friday. So for me, I need to make sure that I don't put myself in a bad position, I don't do things that Jimmie wouldn't do, number one first and foremost, but number two, being somebody different in that vehicle, everybody in the field's going to know that.

"We're winning races, doing the things we need to do right now, running up front", said Harvick, a two-time Brickyard victor.

Johnson has won four Brickyard 400s in 18 starts at Indianapolis. That's the most important piece of all this is getting him back to the race track soon.

Johnson said he was disappointed and anxious about the emotional impact of the positive tests on his young children. He also has to be cleared by a physician.

They could be the two who could struggle, ' Rodgers told reporters in a virtual news conference. For us to be in amongst it, is very good'.

"Jimmie is a true battle-tested champion, and we wish him well in his recovery".

NASCAR has implemented social distancing and mask-wearing procedures at tracks since returning to racing on May 17.

Though Johnson is the first - at least the first to publicly acknowledge - that he has tested positive, the coronavirus pandemic is still raging throughout the United States. Johnson was asymptomatic, but was tested for the virus after his wife tested positive.

If the driver is granted a playoff waiver he could potentially win his eighth championship in the NASCAR Cup Series. Allgaier said that the No. 48 crew unloaded the vehicle Friday to make sure his gear was inside; he'll hop in Sunday morning to make sure everything fits comfortably before that afternoon's 400-miler. The once frosty schism between the two biggest racing series in the United States has thawed and NASCAR's elite Cup Series will share a venue with IndyCar on the same weekend for the first time in history.

"We knew he [Hamlin] was going to be really close on tires and [crew chief] Rodney [Childers} told me on the radio, he said 'just make sure you keep the pressure on him", Harvick said.

Johnson is 12th in the Cup Series standings with six top-10 finishes in 15 starts.

Kenseth, who replaced Kyle Larson following the return of the series following the initial outbreak of COVID-19, got his best finish since the November of 2017 when he won at Phoenix, his final season before initially retiring from driving full-time.
