Hurricane Douglas builds up to Category 3 heading toward Hawaii

Douglas is now a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 115 mph that extend 25 miles from the center of the storm.

The National Weather Service says the latest forecast shows Douglas "passing dangerously close to the islands as a category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale". The good news is this major hurricane is forecast to begin weakening today as it interacts will cooler water and drier air.

In the National Hurricane Center's latest update (NHC), Douglas, a Category 3 storm, is moving west-northwest near 31 km/h, with the motion expected to continue for the next few days before gradually slowing down and shifting towards the west.

Douglas remained a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour.

While more specifics will be known as the storm nears, Hawaii, especially those now under a Hurricane Watch, can expect to see severe winds, flooding rains, and rough surf.

A forecast track has Douglas passing near or over Maui island early Sunday afternoon.

The government of Barbados had canceled its hurricane watch for the island, the center said, but a tropical storm warning remained in effect for the area.

A Hurricane Warning has been issued for Oahu.

Heavy rainfall from Douglas will drench portions of the Hawaiian Islands from late Saturday night through Monday. The hurricane watch is in effect for the Big Island and Maui County. That was in reference to the fact that Covid-19 is surging in the state as Douglas approaches. "Maximum sustained winds are 115 miles per hour while the minimum central pressure is estimated to be 967 mb or 28.56".

"And we don't just focus on the wind".

Since Douglas is a fairly small tropical cyclone, small shifts in its track or intensity fluctuations can mean major differences for the islands in its projected path. Tropical Storm Hanna is expected to make landfall in the Gulf Coast of Texas on Saturday.

The storm also will build huge swells that are very likely to bring about everyday living-threatening surf and rip recent situations for many times.

Hawaiian Electric offered the following advice:-Unplug electric appliances you may not need or use until the storm has passed or until power is restored-Turn your refrigerator /freezer to the coldest setting; in the event of a power outage, food will keep fresh longer-Stock an ice chest with ice or frozen ice packs-Check emergency equipment such as flashlights, emergency generators, battery-operated (hand-crank or solar ) radios, light sticks, and lanterns to be sure they are operational.
