After Trump tweeted primary contender and ex-football coach Tommy Tuberville was "a victor who will never let you down" and blasted his former attorney general as "a disaster who has let us all down", Sessions fired up his own rebuke. Jeff Sessions is a disaster who has let us all down. It's a hard but achievable task as they also try to win back the White House. Sessions held the seat safely for 20 years before resigning to lead Trump's Justice Department.

Trump also asserted Alabamians should not want Sessions "back in Washington" and endorsed Tuberville as a 'winner'.

The feud between Trump and Sessions stemmed from the then-attorney general deciding to recuse himself from any investigations related to Russian interference in the 2016 presidential elections.

Sessions was the first United States senator to endorse Trump in the 2016 presidential race and was once a prominent figure in the Trump administration as the top official leading the Justice Department. "If a light pole had run against Jeff Sessions, Donald Trump would endorse the light pole". Gail Gitcho, a spokesperson for the Sessions campaign, says the money will come for whoever the Republican nominee is, but Jones' fundraising lead could better position him for running a negative campaign against Tuberville, who has no legislative record and tends to focus more on his support for the president than policies themselves. Doug Jones in November.

Sessions responded to Trump on Saturday.

Jones has a massive campaign warchest of $9 million, while neither Tuberville nor Sessions were able to near the $1 million mark in their second quarter fundraising.

His campaign declined to make Tuberville available for an interview or to disclose any of his appearances in the week leading up to the primary. "It's time to send a message to Jeff Sessions that President Trump does not want him or his cronies in the swamp", Tuberville wrote on Twitter last month. He has declined Sessions' multiple challenges to a debate, despite initially saying that he would participate. The Senate is not speaking out sufficiently on trade, immigration, China.

Sessions is trying to make a political comeback but is now an underdog in the fight for his old job after losing the support of the President. Richard Shelby, R-Alabama, has endorsed Sessions. Sessions once held the Senate seat so securely he didn't even draw a challenger. He said it is hard to overestimate Trump's influence in Alabama.

The race advanced to a runoff after no candidate received more than 50% of the vote in a crowded GOP primary in March.

Jackson only earned 19.9 per cent of the Republican vote in the March 3 primary election to Josh Winegarner 28.8 per cent, but it was enough to trigger a runoff between the two.

Mowery said the Tuberville campaign feels confident, "but the question is, as always, who votes". For this election, his office waived absentee ballot requirements, allowing voters anxious about the coronavirus pandemic to vote absentee.

Sessions painted himself as an anti-establishment, unafraid, outside candidate, albeit one with a legislative history to back up his platform.

David Mosley of Ozark greeted Sessions beside the bins of peanuts and watermelons after a campaign stop at Sweet Creek Farm Market.

He said Sessions visited with his units during both of his National Guard deployments, asking the deployed soldiers how he could help them.

"I have a record", he said.
