It has been jointly developed by a Hyderabad-based private firm Bharat Biotech, the Indian Council for Medical Research and the National Institute of Virology. ICMR has fast-tracked the project and selected a dozen institutes for clinical trials of the indigenous COVID-19 vaccine (BBV152 COVID vaccine).
"Non-compliance will be viewed very seriously. Therefore, you are advised to treat the project on highest priority and meet the given timelines without any lapse", it reads. The list of institutions involved in vaccine trials include Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, King George Hospital, Visakhapatnam, University of Health Sciences, Rohtak, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi and AIIMS Patna.
According to Dr. Arjuna, for understanding the effects of any new vaccine on human body it may take four to six weeks and after administering the vaccine and the volunteer is monitored on a daily basis.
Zydus has received approval from Indian regulators to begin human studies for its COVID-19 vaccine contender, the drugmaker said on Friday, as the novel coronavirus infections continue to surge in the world's fourth worst-hit nation. Vaccine development for a new pathogen traditionally takes many years or even decades. "Even with accelerated timelines, this seems really rushed, and hence with potential risks, inadequate attention to process", Bhan wrote in a series of tweets. Animals like mice, rabbits, guinea pigs, and rats were used.
Zydus, which has already manufactured batches of the vaccine candidate, plans to follow an adaptive clinical trial protocol, which allows the company to move straight from phase I to phase II trials without much time in between. As per the recent reports, Bharat Biotech International Ltd and Zydus Cadila have got an approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for human clinical trials for their indigenously developed vaccine candidates against Sars-Cov-2, the virus which causes the coronavirus disease.

Once the initial phases are over, the vaccine will move into the third and final stage of human trials, where it will be tested on thousands of people. Bharat Biotech is working expeditiously to meet the target.
"Based on in-depth scrutiny of the available data from pre-clinical studies, the Drugs Controller General of India has accorded permission to conduct phase 1 and 2 clinical trial", said the Council.
With this, India has now cleared two potential vaccines for the clinical trial phase. Developing a vaccine is a complicated procedure that involves proving its effectiveness and safety, he said.
'We may be able to at least know whether we are dealing with a safe and effective vaccine by the early winter, late winter, (or) beginning of 2021, ' said Dr Fauci in an interview with JAMA Network. "We don't need to be the first to launch a drug but what we need is a Made in India vaccine that the entire world can rely on", she added.
