Coronavirus Deaths In India Cross 20,000, Over 7 Lakh Cases So Far


The Union Health Ministry has reported 24,248 cases and 425 deaths in the last 24 hours. "India's cases per million is 505.37, while the global average is 1,453.25", the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said. Out of the total number of covid cases, 2,59,557 are active while 4,39,948 have been either cured, discharged or migrated. India on Monday overtook Russian Federation as the third most affected country globally, behind the United States and Brazil.

However, a PTI tally showed India's COVID-19 caseload at 7,11,878 and the death toll at 20,139.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 97,89,066 samples were tested for the disease in the country till July 4, with 2,48,934 of those tested on Saturday.

National capital, New Delhi, is also among the epicentres, reporting 100,823 infections and 3,115 deaths. India's death toll rose to 19,268. The US with 28.52 lakh cases continues to remain the worst-hit country in the world, while Brazil occupies the second spot with 15.77 lakh positive cases.

Alluding to the report, the government said India had one of the lowest deaths per million population. The country is now recording over 20,000 cases daily, with Tamil Nadu and Delhi witnessing an uptick in the number of daily infections as both now have over a lakh cases of COVID-19 against their names.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week said India had brought the coronavirus death rate "under control" but stressed that the country is at a "critical juncture".

India is the world's most populous country with over 1.3 billion people residing within its borders, more than triple that of the United States.

India added just shy of 24,000 new Covid-19 cased on Sunday, bringing its total up to 697,836, according to Worldometer data. The state recorded 1,843 new cases on July 6. New Delhi and Mumbai each has about 100,000 cases, with 3,000 dead in the capital and almost 5,000 in Mumbai.

There are 1,115 COVID-19 testing labs in the country, including 793 labs in the government sector and 322 private labs.
