Sydney Black Lives Matter Protestors Pepper Sprayed by Police

Tens of thousands of Australians defied government calls to stay at home yesterday by spilling onto the streets for Black Lives Matter protests in major towns and cities across the country.

But people in favour of the rallies have argued the right to protest is "essential" in the face of injustices endured by Indigenous Australians from authorities, while others stated that protesters were in fact abiding to physical distancing as opposed to gatherings of other undisputed social activities.

More than 2000 people said they would attend the Black Lives Matter event, which will kick off at 10.30am, with protesters marching to Parliament House.

There is a sentiment that suggests people should have a right to protest on significant matters.

But in New South Wales, a planned Black Lives Matter protest has been met with serious pushback from the police.

"If it is to proceed then it must be conducted in a manner which does not breach the chief health officer directions".

In Germany, calls went out on social media for protesters to take to the streets to honor Floyd, after a week of demonstrations in cities like Hamburg and Frankfurt.

At 4.32pm, demonstrators knelt en masse in Sydney's Belmore Park and held a fist aloft to acknowledge the 432 Aboriginal people who have died in custody since 1991.
