Tens of thousands of Australians defied government calls to stay at home yesterday by spilling onto the streets for Black Lives Matter protests in major towns and cities across the country.
But people in favour of the rallies have argued the right to protest is "essential" in the face of injustices endured by Indigenous Australians from authorities, while others stated that protesters were in fact abiding to physical distancing as opposed to gatherings of other undisputed social activities.
More than 2000 people said they would attend the Black Lives Matter event, which will kick off at 10.30am, with protesters marching to Parliament House.
But social distancing proved hard, with many forced to huddle shoulder-to-shoulder as crowds swelled in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane.
Apart from the United States, mass protests have taken place in Greece, Italy, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Germany, France, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and other countries.

But in New South Wales, a planned Black Lives Matter protest has been met with serious pushback from the police.
