Tesla's China sales hit record high in March: industry association

Well, it seems like the old Model 3 LRRWD is finally back as the Chinese version of the online Tesla configurator has started listing this particular variant as a "China-made model selection".

The four-door vehicle sells for 366,550 yuan ($52,000) before rebates, according to Tesla's website, and is created to have a range of about 668 kilometers (415 miles) on one charge.

The reason the news attracted so much attention was that Tesla had stopped production of the long-range Model 3 RWD model in the US before.

Prior to this, the only Chinese made Tesla was the Model 3 Standard Range RWD.

The rear-wheel drive variant, with a driving range of over 600 kilometers before needing to be recharged, differs from the imported version which was all-wheel drive and priced 439,900 yuan.

The longer-range electric model could help Tesla fend off competition from other global automakers, including Volkswagen AG and BMW AG and local rivals struggling to sell cars during the coronavirus pandemic.

But staff have already received documents to sign stating they agreed with the pay-cuts and temporary changes to their contracts. The UK government says members of the public should stay at home to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

Ultimately, starting Giga Berlin's initial target of 3,000 Model Y per week shows that Tesla is very confident with its new vehicle, as well as its capability to produce it on a new factory. The U.S. carmaker may not be immune to China's auto-industry slump as it witnessed a fall in registration for two consecutive months.

More scope for China, apparently.

China-made Long Range Model 3 vehicles will be priced at 339,050 yuan after getting subsidies, while locally made Performance Model 3 will be priced at 419,800 yuan.

Tesla sold 10,160 vehicle in China during March to set a monthly record in a market that was down 41% Y/Y overall for the month.
