Apple & Google Are Developing Coronavirus Tracking Technology

Global lockdowns owing to the coronavirus pandemic has led to a surge in smartphone usage with many apps experiencing huge spikes in new downloads. The APIs will enable interoperability between Android and iOS devices using apps from public health authorities. For example, you'd technically receive the same notification if you sat next to someone on the train for an hour or if you never came into contact with someone but were close to them through an apartment wall. The server would then alert the phones of anybody with whom I'd come in contact in the last 14 days (people can carry the virus for 14 days before showing symptoms).

"In the coming months, Apple and Google will work to enable a broader Bluetooth-based contact tracing platform by building this functionality into the underlying platforms", the companies informed. Some companies have also used location tracking technology to track spring breakers who flouted social distancing warnings in Florida. Both Apple and Google are working together at a software level to ensure that this kind of contact tracing, and representatives from the two companies have revealed more details about how this will work.

Most experts agree that contact-tracing is one of the most important factors to "re-opening" society.

"To their credit, Apple and Google have announced an approach that appears to mitigate the worst privacy and centralization risks, but there is still room for improvement", Jennifer Granick, surveillance and cybersecurity counsel at the ACLU, said in a statement.

Corona epidemic reduce in NY , soon things will improve
Likewise, the rate of new intensive-care admissions and intubations - when patients are put on a ventilator - also plummeted. Governor Cuomo has begun deliberations into reopening New York State's economy, although the way ahead is still unclear.

"It's very interesting, but a lot of people worry about it in terms of a person's freedom", he said during a White House press conference. "We're going to take a look at that".

While the feature is useful in quickly informing other people of COVID-19 cases in the area, people could use this information for mischief, such as briefly visiting the area and spreading their travel data. Since the entire system is end-to-end encrypted, not only can't bad guys get access to your location or personal information, not even Apple could identify your device location.

However, emphasis have been put on the fact that privacy, transparency, and consent are of utmost importance in this effort.
