Mainland China had 99 new confirmed cases of coronavirus infections on Friday, NHC said on Saturday, down from 143 cases a day earlier and marking the lowest number since January 20, when the NHC started to publish nationwide figures. Liam Woods, HSE director of acute operations, said: "Healthcare workers are at the frontline of this virus outbreak".

He also said retired health care professional may be asked to come back into service, "if there are significant pressures on our health service in the weeks ahead".

In Germany, the number of cases jumped to 684 on Saturday, reflecting a tenfold increase in the past week and the second-largest number of cases outside Italy, which has at least 4,636 cases.
