Chinese health authorities said they have received reports of 202 new confirmed cases of novel coronavirus and 42 deaths on Sunday on the Chinese mainland, Xinhua reported.

Saturday saw 2,623 people discharged from hospital after recovery, the commission said.

Scott Becker, the head of the Association of Public Health Laboratories, says that more than 40 public health labs should be able to test for the virus by the end of the weekend. Officials have anxious the disease could spread widely in countries with weaker public health systems, specifically in Africa and Latin America.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is now allowing the use of new diagnostic technologies that will test for the Coronavirus, or COVID-19, at multiple hospitals and healthcare facilities in the country. "We have never before seen a respiratory pathogen that is capable of community transmission, but which can also be contained with the right measures", NAN quoted him as saying.

"Our epidemiologists have been monitoring these developments continuously, and we have now increased our assessment of the risk of spread and the risk of impact of COVID-19 to very high at a global level", he said.

"A Pandemic is a unique situation, in which all citizens on the planet will likely be exposed to a virus within a defined period of time", state-run Xinhua news agency quoted Michael Ryan, executive director of WHO Health Emergencies Programme as saying.

Citing the work of its researchers in China, the World Health Organization said earlier this week that the fatality rate for COVID-19 is "between 2% and 4% in Wuhan, and 0.7% outside Wuhan". It is the 15th confirmed case of COVID-19 in the US, not including evacuees from Wuhan and the Diamond Princess cruise ship.
